The Region VII California Common Core Conference, held on September 28th at the Fresno Convention Center,
was a big success. A number of speakers presented information on a
variety of topics related to CCCSS, and participants were able to
receive responses to questions about Common Core Standards.
As promised, TCOE is making available the presentations from the day’s speakers on the main page of our CCCSS Site.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS REGISTRATION OPEN
Please register your school's teams for Battle of the Books, an event to promote literacy and the joy of r eading, open to teams of students in grades 6-8 and 9-12.
Battle of the Books is an exciting competition held in the United States and around the World. For the Battle of the Books, students read a common list of books (selected for each level by a national committee,) and come together to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge in four exciting battles.
School teams should ideally be composed of 6 members, with an alternate in case a student is unable to participate on the Battle Day. Sometimes circumstances are such that a school may need to send a team of as few as 4 individuals; teams consisting of less than 4 students are not accepted. Schools are encouraged to hold their own mock battles prior to the countywide competition.
Teams of students will answer questions drawn from a limited list of titles. Middle School List High School List March 7, 2012: Middle School Event March 8, 2012: High School Event Battle of the Books Rules

YOUNG AUTHOR'S FAIRE
The Young Author's Faire, held February 27 - March 2, offers budding writers in grades K-8 an opportunity to have their books read by others. The books, which are written by students, are on display for a week in the Elderwood Room of the Tulare County Office of Education's Doe Avenue campus (7000 Doe Avenue). During the week, visitors are invited to read and comment on the books. This event always has a great response.
An evening reception on Tuesday, February 28th will be held from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., so that the public can meet the young authors and help them celebrate in their success.
For more information, please email Maria Ortiz or Sara Torabi, or call (559) 651-3031.
Please encourage your students to start writing their awesome and creative books now!
